Football Programs

UNITY provides two primary football programs: fall tackle football and spring flag football. The programs are intended to develop football skills, encourage physical fitness, and promote mentoring opportunities for youth, both boys and girls, from 5 to 14 years of age. UNITY is a very competitive association with many past championship teams. Most recently, in 2011, two of our younger tackle football teams reached the divisional championship in just our rookie year with the GMYFL. We believe, and teach, that you play to WIN, but understand that losing is always a possibility when you compete; it becomes a learning and growth opportunity. How you face victory is as important as how you face defeat; both with dignity and respect for self and opponent. UNITY, through its football programs and experience, is focused on building men and women of refined character and high self-confidence. Hopefully, one of our programs below will be a fit for your child, and you will become part of the UNITY family. UNITY - a tradition of excellence.

Fall Tackle Football (2012)

The fall tackle football program is 11 on 11 full contact football governed primarily by high school federation rules. Traditionally, the season begins in late July and ends in early November. Approximately, 8 regular season games are played on consecutive Saturdays starting in September, with playoffs and championships taking place in November.

Timeline (2012): Registration begins March 1st. Official practices begin the week of July 23rd. Equipment handout August 4th. Full equipment practices begin August 6th.

Equipment: UNITY will provide each player with a helmet, shoulder pads, mouthpiece, and practice and game jersey. The player is responsible for providing his/her own padded practice pants (preferably black) and cleats.

Practice Location(s) and Times: Practice location(s) for 2012 are currently being determined, but practices will be scheduled from Monday thru Thursday with scrimmages on Saturdays during the summer until school begins. When school begins, practices will be Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during the week with games on Saturdays. The practice field is available from 5:30 to 8:30pm; the head coach will determine exact practice hours. Game locations and times are determined by the league. The full game schedule will not be available until the week before the first scheduled game in September.

Requirements: Each player must have a valid Maryland Identification Card issued by the MVA, a valid passport, or a military ID as proof of their age. This ID must be presented at each game in order for the player to participate. Residents of the District of Columbia may request a League ID when the other three forms of identification cannot be obtained. Please note that League ID cost is set by the GMYFL, and not UNITY. In addition, each player must obtain league insurance through the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) before being eligible to practice in full gear or participate in scrimmages and games (no exceptions). This simple insurance registration can be completed in 5 minutes via the AAU website. From the website, player should print their card, and then present their card to their coach.

Registration Fee(s): Normal registration fees per player is $150.00. An early registration discount is provided to any player that registers and pays in full before July 1st (see registration form for discount amount). For players that would like to pay over time, a monthly plan can be used if registration is submitted with a down-payment in or before March. In addition, a $50.00 equipment deposit will need to be made per player on equipment distribution day in August. This deposit is fully refundable. If a check is used, the check will not be deposited unless the loaned equipment is not returned in full.

Teams: UNITY is a member of the Greater Metropolitan Youth Football League (GMYFL), which provides age-based competition for boys and girls across the Washington metropolitan area. UNITY supports an age-based approach to competition with 1 or more teams at the 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U levels. Eligibility to play on a given team is based on the player's age as of July 31st of the current year.

6U 5 & 6 UNITY Considers the 6U and 8U teams competitively developmental. The very basic fundamentals of football concepts and techniques are learned. During games, coaches are on the field to ensure current technique is used for blocking and tackling to ensure safety. Again, emphasis is placed on proper blocking, tackling, and the general game experience. The football fundamentals learned at these levels are vital to the association's success at the older age level teams in later years. http://unitymightymites.shutterfly.com Ariel Dominguez
